“Add me on BBM!” “The new Galaxy S2 X came out yesterday!” “Is your iPhone jailbroken?”
Seems like every time a new phone releases, or when your friend gets a new phone, that’s all you ever hear about. Cell phones have become so integrated into our daily lives such that many of us would go so far as to say “I would go ape**** without my phone”. Naturally, we count on a good deal of research (both your friends’ opinions and Google’s) to decide on the right phone. For those in the market for a new phone, you’re in luck! Without getting too technical and nerdy, here’s a rundown on the three big players in the market and their list of key features:
BlackBerry – Bold 9900
- BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)
- Easy-to-use e-mailing
- Legendary keyboard
- Screen size 2.8”, 5 megapixel camera, 720p HD video
The selling point of any BlackBerry phone would undoubtedly be the BBM, emailing system, and keyboard. Despite the introduction of ChatON, iMessage, or WhatsApp that tries to mimic BlackBerry, BBM remains as a favourite messenger application through developing a long reputation of exclusivity and reliability during the last several years. Efficient e-mailing is also what defines the BlackBerry by allowing you to connect an unlimited amount of e-mail accounts into one place, as well as its overall ease of use. To top all these features off with a keyboard that allows you to type so accurately and quickly (or just the fact the *clicking* noise satisfies you), no wonder many people call this the business person’s phone! And finally, with Thorsten Heins recently named as the new CEO, it will be interesting to see if RIM can make a turnaround from its ongoing decline. iPhone – 4S
- Siri: Intelligent software assistant
- Apps, apps and apps
- More apps
- Screen size 3.5”, 8 megapixel camera, 1080p HD video
With over 500,000 apps available, the list of applications is what makes the iPhone so special. From game apps, to utilities apps, to productivity apps and more, the iPhone is the face of entertainment. Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja anyone? Upgrading from its predecessor (iPhone 4), the 4S not only has a better and smoother notification system, but also includes the magical Siri, an intelligent software assistant. Activated through voice command, Siri is your personal assistant that is also capable of a whole lot more (e.g. it can solve derivatives for you!). And for all you Apple fans, here’s another reason to be excited, as the iPhone 5 is set to be released in the summer of 2012. For more information on the 4S, click here.

Android – Samsung Galaxy S2 X
- Largest screen
- Widgets
- Best processor of the 3
- Screen size 4.5”, 8 megapixel camera, 1080p HD video
Released in late 2011, the Samsung Galaxy S2 X is truly a tech wonder. The magic is behind Android widgets, where users are able to customize the layout and other aspects of their phone. Widgets are more than just regular applications, as they enable users to instantly access a variety of information, various shortcuts, and many more (For the curious: Explaining Android Widgets). Aside from these awesome widgets, the Galaxy S2 X runs on an excellent processor, making it faster than the BlackBerry and iPhone. Top that off with a large screen, the phone boasts a very smooth and fast usability. And with the iPhone 5 set to release in the summer, no surprises that Google has plans of its own, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 looking to release around that same time. The Verdict
So which phone is right for you? Unfortunately, as you may have guessed, there is no definite answer because it is completely up to the user to decide.
